NEWSTEAD, N.Y. (WIVB) - A devastating crash has claimed a woman's life and injured three young children.
Investigators aren't sure what caused 65-year-old Donna Gibbs, of Alden, to pull out in front of a tractor trailer carrying several cars.
She wasn't the only one inside the mangled Lincoln mercury, buckled up, and waiting for help. A relative tells News 4, six-year-old Victoria Gibbs, seven-year-old Ricky Gibbs and seven-year-old Madison Phillips were also in the car.
Only one child is in stable condition, two are in critical at Children's Hospital, according to a family member.
At around 5 p.m Thursday, Erie County Sheriff's Deputies say a truck was heading east on Route 5 in the Town of Newstead, traveling about 55 mph.
The truck driver didn't have a stop sign at the South Newstead Road intersection, but you can see from these skid marks he tried to stop.
Investigators say Donna Gibbs, who was driving the car, attempted to turn west onto Route 5 and apparently didn't see the oncoming big rig.
Sgt. Joseph Belden says a 39-year-old Akron woman who was driving a Jeep was also involved in the crash.
She suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the tractor trailer wasn't injured.
