Duff's gets to brag Obama came to visit

DEPEW, N.Y. (WIVB) - A surprise visit from the President gave western New York's recently-crowned "wing king" something to brag about.

President Obama's visit to Duff's in Depew is already having an impact on this new business. Plates of chicken wings are flying out of the kitchen. And you wouldn't normally see a line of people waiting for a seat on a Thursday night.

Cheryl Fechter said, "We did see the President on TV this afternoon, so I suggested to my daughter that we should come here and try this location."

Michael Jones and his family will remember this as a special night for two reasons.

Jones said, "My little brother's birthday and the President came here to eat the chicken wings. You know, so we up here for that."

No one here knew the President was coming until he actually walked through the door.

Duff's Manager Kaitlyn Feather said, "He walks in and somebody yells, "President Obama's here!""

Feather called the owner right away.

Duff's owner Kirk Feather said, "My daughter called me, "Dad! President Obama's here!""

The President placed an order to go at 12:57 p.m.

Waitress Mary DiGiacomo said, "I was a nervous wreck. I never shook so bad taking an order in my life."

He was only here for 30 minutes. Shaking hands with everybody and even holding someone's baby. It wasn't a long visit, but Duff's will now be remembered as the place a sitting U.S. President came to for tasty chicken wings. His order?

DiGiacomo said, "Ten wings, medium, onion rings and fries."

It was just a few months ago that Duff's beat out Anchor Bar for having the best wings in town on a new show on the Travel Channel.

Kirk Feather said, "I think, long-term, people wanna know where the President went in town. The news coverage has been tremendous. It's an honor that the President would stop at our place to eat."

President Obama did pay for his bill even though the staff insisted he didn't have to. The manager tells News 4 she was told by his aides that he was required to do so.
