Fire breaks out near Alfred University

ALFRED, NY (WIVB) - A massive fire tore through several buildings in the college town of Alfred Thursday morning.

The blaze destroyed two businesses and burned eight students out of their dwellings. The building directly on the corner of West University St. and Main St. is described as a "total loss".

One adjoining building on North side of the intersection likey has smoke and water damage.

Six of the eight student residents who lived in apartments in the building were from Alfred University. The other two were from Alfred State College.

The two businesses destroyed are Alex's Tavern and The Collegiate. Both are well-known in this small town, where college students outnumber residents.

No injuries were reported.

As of 11:30 a.m. the fire was "no longer a threat to adjoining buildings".
