ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) - State senators are reportedly nearing a power-sharing deal
Wednesday afternoon, but so far, it's just talk.
"I am directing the state treasurer to withhold any pay
checks or per diem checks from June 8 forward. If you're not coming
to work you shouldn't get paid," New York State Governor David
Paterson said.
Lawmakers are supposed to receive a check in the mail for
their work Wednesday, but for the first time in New York State
Senate history, our elected officials may not get paid.
The reason, for one month the evenly split Senate in Albany
has been fighting over who is in control. Local Democrat Senator
William Stachowski said the latest Republican proposal isn't a
total power sharing agreement.
That's because Espada would remain Senate president. Power
sharing would take place at other levels, but Senator George
Maziarz maintains what Republicans plan to do is make sure
communities like Western New York get the same attention as
communities down state.
In a State of the Senate type of speech, planned at 5 pm, the
Governor will address the public about what's next and whether he
will select a Lt. Governor to break the 31-31 split.
News 4 will be covering the Governor's address on News 4 at 5
pm and streaming it live here on WIVB.com.
News 4 will also be updating a live blog during the speech,
where you can leave your comments.
