DARIEN, N.Y. (WIVB) - 32 passengers on the Ride of Steel at Darien Lake had to be evacuated Thursday evening after the ride malfunctioned.
A spokeswoman for Darien Lake tells News 4 a car was halfway up the track on the coaster's lift just after 6 p.m. when a chain broke. The car came to an immediate stop, and within 30 minutes, the passengers were all safely on the ground. Chris Thorpe, the general manager, said, "All redundant safety systems functioned precisely as planned, including the immediate train stop. Ride of Steel will be closed until further notice."
The ride was just recently re-opened after the tragic death of Sgt. James Hackemer, a wounded war veteran missing his two legs who flew out of the car and perished.
