Should town limit cats in each home?

WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WIVB) - It's a real cat fight in West Seneca and Monday night a proposed four feline limit per household will be up for debate.

Town Attorney Shawn Martin said, “There are a few places in town that seem to have an excess of cats. The odors and the smells are just obnoxious."

"There's nothing that has any teeth to it within the law, there's no ordinance on cats. We were finding homes with 20-28 cats, a situation where 40-50 bowls are out in backyards,” said West Seneca Supervisor Sheila Meegan.

Meegan says something needs to be done to put limits on cat ownership. The proposed change int he law states no more than four cats permitted per household, and all accumulation of the refuse must be disposed of appropriately.

Some residents wonder if the law goes too far. West Seneca Resident Ron Bolander said, “How far do we go into the invasion of property and people in their homes. On the other hand, I know there are some outside concerns."

The four cat limit is modeled after the cat ordinance in Hamburg. Before it can be approved, there will be the public hearing Monday night at West Seneca Town Hall.
