AMHERST, NY (WIVB) - The Superintendent of the Amherst School District confirmed that a student has died from an undisclosed illness.

Superintendent Laura Chabe told News 4 a female high school student died Sunday morning following a brief illness.  Chabe says she does not know the cause of death, but the Erie County Health Department has been notified. Chabe says the Health Department told her the Amherst Schools are safe and should remain open.

Parents in the Amherst School District were notified Sunday night of the student’s death via a recorded phone message. The message did not reveal a cause of death or identity of the victim. The Health Department spokesman says he can confirm the student’s death, but cannot reveal any more details.

Chabe says support will be available for all students, teachers and staff who may need it. She says this is “a sad day for the district.”
