BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - New information on Tuesday on dozens of dogs rescued from a field in the Town of Concord.
The SPCA reports an additional dog was found at the scene dead on Monday.
That brings the total number found to 31.
Most of them are recovering from wounds and infections at the SPCA.
Five of them are expecting puppies.
They'll be placed in foster care before finding permanent homes.
The discovery of these puppies was made possible due to a passer-by with a keen eye. A passenger in a car driven by the Town of Concord Animal Control Officer just happened to be looking out of the side window of the car and saw the puppies. The dogs were headed south on the 219 expressway.
Concord Dog Control Officer Carolyn Robinson said, "There were dogs everywhere, it was a tide of little dogs. About 15 came running to me and wanted me to pick them up, but, I was just overcome."
Assistant Dog Control Officer Elise Able recalled many of the puppies were hiding along a fence by the side of the road. Some of the others dogs sent the two officers on a chase down a ravine.
Able said that if any of the dogs are still hiding, unfortunately it may not be for long. "The chance of any that we didn't catch surviving is slim. The weather's gonna change, there's wildlife out here, we've got the 219 expressway pretty close," she explained.
The puppies have been cleaned up and evaluated by medical staff. The SPCA suspects the puppies were bred at a puppy mill due to their condition - diseased, flea infested and some of them pregnant.
The SPCA is investigating this case. If you have any information, call 875-7360.
