AMHERST, N.Y. - Erie County will for the first time offere a prescription drug collection day on Saturday, May 30.
Recent studies have shown contamination in water supplies from people flushing prescriptions into the water system. Tossing them into the garbage creates a problem with ground toxins.
The county is taaming up the the Town of Amherst, the University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy and the state Deparmtne of Health for a safe collection campaign.
People can bring their outdated and unwanted medications to the Getzville Fire Company at Doge Road and Campbell Boulevard on Saturday from 9am to 1pm.
The pharmaceuticals will then be incinerated in a proper place.
Monroe and Niagara counties are also planning similar programs.
Unwanted or expired prescription or over-the-counter medications, syringes, inhalers, ointments, patches and other items will be accepted.
