TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Hundreds of National Guard troops will soon be in western New York, training to deal with the aftermath of an earthquake.
Local officials emphasized to the public that there's no reason to panic Monday night, during a meeting at Tonawanda High School.
It's all part of a massive training exercise taking place the first week of November at the Spaulding Fiber Plant.
"Training and exercises are critical to be able to effectively manage incidents. Going back to Flight 3407 or the recent flooding in Southern Erie County, exercises are a great opportunity to practice and be able to work more closely with your emergency responders, including the National Guard," said Erie County Commissioner of Emergency Services Greg Skibitsky.
More than 1,300 troops will be in town for the six-day exercise.
