BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The University at Buffalo is introducing a new program to prepare Western New Yorkers for jobs in the growing Life Sciences industry.

Bio-chemists in the labs of the UB Center of Excellence in Buffalo are developing drugs and altering genomes, complicated stuff.

But you don't have to be a scientist to get one of the many jobs available in the growing life sciences industry.

Dr. Marni Lavigne stated, "There are people looking for work today as well all know. And many of those individuals are actually well qualified, they just need the orientation to understand where they can go in life sciences."

UB is launching a new program called, I-Sci-WNY which teaches adults who are looking for a new career and students as well, about the various career paths in the life sciences industry.

"There are great careers in manufacturing, information technology, quality control and a wide array of business and support occupations," said Dr. Lavigne.

Gaymar Industries, a medical products manufacturing company is just one of 120 local life sciences companies.

It's looking to hire right now.

Dr. Thomas Stewart, President of Gaymar Industries said, "80% of the positions at our Orchard Park headquarters are not positions that require a science background."

I-Sci-WNY uses free workshops, training programs and a web site to get local job seekers on the path to a new career.

Anything from entry level to management positions.

"Because our community is so rich in its education institutions and training opportunities, there is a way for you to keep moving up that pathway and you can move up to a six figure salary if you're motivated to do that," exclaimed Dr. Lavigne.

Students who want more information about iSciWNY can find it at their schools.

But adults looking for a new career path should go to www.iSciWNY.com to get more information about the life sciences industry.
