AAA questions Buffalo gas prices

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) - The price per gallon at the pump is falling, but AAA has noticed a trend that is raising eyebrows through New York State. The Buffalo area is seeing much higher prices than other markets.

"We had a some real drastic increases about three months ago and it lasted about maybe a two month period. As prices have gone down, we have seen that disparity become greater," said Wally Smith, the Vice President of AAA of western and central New York.

Right now the national average is $3.50 a gallon. Rochester is $3.66, and Buffalo is .09 cents higher at $3.75 - just under the New York City price of $3.80, which is higher because of taxes.

AAA is questioning the reason for the disparity, wants to make the public aware, and is hoping the retailers will answer for it.

Congressmen Brian Higgins said that it should be brought to the attention of the Federal Trade Commission when asked about the difference in prices.

"I am not quite sure. There is no reason why it should be if they price and the commodity is the same so that should be something that should be pursued," Higgins said.

The public response was pretty accepting, saying it's just the way it is. Many are just happy prices are falling.

"I think it has a lot to do with around Buffalo. Prices for a lot of things tend to be higher. It would be nice if gas prices could be a little bit lower," said Chelsea Manikowski.

Bill LaPorta said, "They are going lower now at $3.73. We were hearing by summer it would be going up to five bucks."
