AAA shares holiday air travel tips

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - As people take to the skies for their holiday plans, the AAA is reminding travelers to consider these tips so they are prepared for unexpected problems.

• Re-confirm flights in advance – Check with your airport or airline carrier before you leave the house for any weather-related delays or cancellations. You can also sign up to receive email alerts from your airline's website.

• Carry-on luggage – If problems arise with your departing or connecting flights, you want your valuables to be with you, not at your final destination. Pack medication, keys, travel documents, jewelry, toiletries, important phone numbers and other essential or expensive items in a carry-on bag.

• Avoid the lines – If your flight is canceled, don’t rely solely on your airport’s ticket agents for information.  Call the airline’s reservation number, check its web site, or call your travel agent to make alternate plans. Be sure to program these numbers into your cell phone.

• Pack Defensively – Come to the airport prepared for a delayed flight. Bring books, toiletries, games for children and other things to help endure delays.

• Buy airline tickets with a credit card – If your flight is canceled, you will be more likely to get a refund.

• Contact information – In the event of a delay or cancellation, the airline may contact you directly. Be sure to provide your carrier with an up-to-date cell phone number and email address.

• Know the limitations on your ticket. The airline’s contract of carriage does not require it to provide passengers with any additional services when flights are delayed or canceled due to bad weather. This is different from situations where flights are delayed for mechanical or other reasons.

• Travel insurance - If you've purchased travel insurance, please inquire about your coverage with your travel consultant or travel insurance company.
