WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Sabres were out of town Sunday, but there was still some hockey being played in Buffalo.
Skaters competed in the Fifth Annual Tim Horton's Backyard Classic ice hockey game where more than 100 players hit the ice to support "Hasek's Heroes."
What amazes event coordinator, Nick Penberthy is the big jump the tournament has gotten since its first year where just 12 kids played.
"It shows that Buffalo is hockey heaven. This is an outdoor, just grass roots effort and its grown so much just through our own connections," said Penberthy. He expects to raise $15,000 from this year's tournament which would bring their fundraising total over the past five years to $35,000.
The proceeds from the tournament will go toward creating an educational resource room at the Caszenovia Ice Rink.
