BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Asian Carp have now been spotted beyond an electrical barrier that was intended to keep them out of the Great Lakes.

News 4's George Richert gave us a first glimpse of these flying hungry fish back in May. Now they are closer than ever before.

Jennifer Nambone of Great Lakes United said, "They are extremely hungry fish. They eat a tremendous amount of algae and plankton which is the basis of the food chain. So what you may see is a collapse in the food chain in Lake Erie."

If the carp make it all the way into the Great Lakes they will target the Walleye and Smallmouth Bass populations.
Marine Scientists and legislators are working quickly to try and stop these fish, but it may already be too late.

News 4 recently spoke with a wildlife specialist about this invasive species and what they are going to do to try and stop it.
