BATAVIA, NY (WIVB) - The new Alpina yogurt plant in Batavia has started hiring workers.
The Genesee County facility expects to have up to 50 workers by the end of the year. Twenty five will start work July 16.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand toured the facility on Tuesday. The Senator is on the Senate’s Agriculture Committee. The Batavia Daily News reports that Gillibrand was asked if New York dairy farmers will be able to produce enough milk to meet the requirements of Alpina and Project Wave, a $206 million yogurt plant also under construction in the Ag Park. She said that NYS dairies are positioning themselves to meet all of the requirements for all of the yogurt facilities that are being developed.
Alpina produces Restart Yogurt; Avena, an oat-based smoothie and Juan Valdez Cafe Latte, a vodka drink made by Oatka Milk Products in Batavia.
Alpina’s Batavia site is the company’s first food plant in the United States. The company is based in Bogota, Colombia
