PITTSBURGH, P.A. (WIVB) - Former Buffalo Bills superstar Cookie Gilchrist has died. Gilchrist, a Buffalo Bills running great died early Monday in an assisted living facility in Pittsburgh.
Gilchrist was 75 years old hand had been hospitalized with cancer since September.
The Buffalo Bills alum played three season in Buffalo, from 1962 to 1964 and a star on the Bills' 1964 AFL Championship team.
Before joining the Bills, Gilchrist had already established a reputation as one of the greatest players in the history of the Canadian Football League, where he played for six years.
In an early civil rights victory for black athletes, Gilchrist led a successful boycott of New Orleans as the site of the 1965 American Football League All-Star game. He is the only athlete to turn down being enshrined into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum, because of what he described as racism and exploitation by management.
