Breaches may extend beyond Buffalo area

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - News 4 has learned that security breaches of KeyBank Mastercard debit and credit cards may extend beyond Buffalo and its suburbs.  Secret Service Agent in Charge Tracy Gast tells News 4 Senior Correspondent Rich Newberg the investigation could be widening to include Syracuse, Rochester, and Albany. 

The Secret Service is assisting local police departments who have received complaints from bank customers whose card numbers have been fraudulently used for purchases in parts of the United States and Canada.   Town of Tonawanda police were first to bring the case to light. 

Detectives believe the security breach involves KeyBank's data base.  The bank insists the breach occurred at a fast food chain.  The Secret Service has not yet elevated the investigation to "federal" status.  Should this happen, U.S. Attorney William Hochul's Office could become involved, working with Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita.

The Secret Service advises anyone whose card numbers have been fraudulently used, to file reports with local police departments.
