BROCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) - SUNY Brockport student, Alexandra Kogut was found dead in her dorm room early Saturday morning in McLean Hall, and now her boyfriend has been charged with her murder.

Kogut was 18 years-old and from New Hartford N.Y.  She was a freshman at the university majoring in Communications.

The College at Brockport, State University of New York, President John R. Halstead released a statement that says,   “On behalf of our entire campus community, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alexandra Kogut. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her loved ones at this difficult time. These are trying times for our campus but I know we will pull together and support each other as we move through the coming days."

University Police began investigating when Kogut's mother called the college. The victim was found at around 3 a.m. and police say she was brutally murdered, suffering upper body trauma.

An hour later, police arrested her boyfriend, 21-year-old Clayton Whittemore, at a Thruway rest stop. The New Hartford, NY man is not attending SUNY Brockport.

While attending New Hartford High School, Whittemore was a star hockey player, once named Athlete of the Week by a local TV station twice in the same season. He helped his team win back-to-back state hockey titles in 2009 and 2010 and was named Division II State Player of the Year in 2010.

Now, Whittemore is in jail without bail after being arraigned on second degree murder charges. He was arrested once before, in January 2011, when he was arrested in Florida for public intoxication.

A temporary hotline for parents has been set up by the university to field questions and concerns.  You can reach that hotline at 585-734-3925.
