CLARENCE, N.Y. (WIVB) - More than 2,300 people in Clarence were without power most of the night after a nasty crash. A car and a truck crashed, sending the truck into a pole. This all happened at Old Goodrich and Greiner just around 11 p.m. Thursday.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says 25-year-old Carl J. Monkelbaan, of Depew, tried to pass a left-turning car on the right. Police say he hit the car and then hit the utility pole.
Police say Monkelbaan refused a sobriety test and was taken to the hospital for evaluation, where he was medically cleared by emergency room staff. The sheriff’s office says Monkelbaan refused to provide a sample to determine his blood alcohol content .
The sheriff’s office says they are notifying the Department of Motor Vehicles for an immediate suspension of Monkelbaan’s driver’s license. They say Monkelbaan was taken to the Erie County Holding Center, as the 56th DWI arrest the sheriff’s office has made in 2013.
