US Marshals track down Cara Dickey

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The search is over for former teacher and convicted sex offender Cara Dickey, and her partner Candice Brighon after U.S. Marshals tracked them down Saturday afternoon in Illinois.

RELATED | Former South Buffalo Charter School teacher, Dickey was found guilty of having sex with one of her students back in April 2009.

She was on parole January 9th, 2013 when she cut her electronic ankle bracelet off and went missing for more than one month.

Since January 10th, the search for Dickey and her partner continued.

A twist in the case that recently become known was when Dickey was picked up by the Chicago Police Department February 13th on a prostitution charge in which she was not arrested, but was given an appearance ticket. She used an alias and was released.

She wasn't on the run for long however, just three days later, she was back in handcuffs. U.S. Marshall of western New York Charles Salina said, "Over the course of those two days we tracked leads and began to receive numerous tips to her whereabouts in Chicago which ended up leading us to the arrest yesterday afternoon at Super 8 motel outside of Chicago."

Salina said they followed leads in Atlanta, GA, Cleveland, OH, and Chicago, IL before finding her.

"To catch an individual that was using an alias that had fled the jurisdiction across state lines to catch someone within a months time is outstanding work," said Salina.

Dickey violated her parole by cutting off her ankle bracelet. The parole board was also concerned that she was having another inappropriate relationship with an underage boy.

In addition, Buffalo Police issued an arrest warrant for failure to register a new address since Dickey is a sex offender.

Picking up Dickey on the prostitution charge was a big break in the case. "It just goes to show that when you're on the run, you need money and my suspicion is that she was probably out of money or looking for her and her counterpart money to stay on the run," said Salina.

She is currently being held at the Cook County Jail in Chicago where she is booked as a fugitive from justice. The ex-teacher no longer on the run will be extradited back to Buffalo within the next 30 days.
