Charged bus driver bails out of jail

RANDOLPH, N.Y. (WIVB) - A school bus driver is accused of abusing a child and on Monday, 66-year-old John Hitchcock appeared before a judge.

After pleading not guilty, Hitchcock was released on bail. He's accused of molesting a boy under the age of 13. But many questions remain unanswered.

The school bus driver, who is currently on administrative leave, allegedly sexually abused the boy from September to October last year at various locations in Chautauqua County.

Chautauqua County District Attorney David Foley calls it "disturbing" and says right now he does not know of any other victims.

"We don't have any reason to believe any additional children are involved. However, if anyone should suspect it would be occurring, they are encouraged to contact their local police department," Foley said.

Prosecutors, investigators and school officials have not released any further details, such as whether the alleged abuse happened on the bus or if anyone else was present.

"It's disturbing to a certain degree, given his relationship to the child," Foley said.

School officials are not answering questions such as how long Hitchcock has been driving bus and whether he passed a background check.

When reached Monday, the school business executive referred News to a statement on the school website that states the district placed Hitchcock on administrative leave when the matter was first brought to their attention.

Judge John ward set bail at $50,000 cash, $100,000 property at Monday's arraignment. Hitchcock was able to pay it and is out of custody. His next court hearing is set for March 25th.
