Coast Guard stymied by "Brash Ice"

Ice cutting operations cancelled due to conditions

BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - The U.S. Coast Guard was forced to cancel plans for ice-breaking this past Sunday in the Buffalo area.

They were due to work on the Buffalo Outer Harbor and the southern approach to the Port of Buffalo but decided to cancel to what they call “brash ice”.   The lake has sharp ice formations five-feet deep in some areas, making it impossible for the Coast Guard to get through.

The U.S. Coast Guard notified local media outlets last week that the Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay and the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Griffon were heading this way to clear the channels for a commercial vessel, the Algoma Enterprise.
