AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) - The site where Alix Rice died became a gathering place of sad memories and memorials Wednesday night after a jury found Dr. James Corasanti not guilty on all major counts.
Tender moments were shared between friends on Heim Road where Rice was killed last July.
"As soon as I heard about the accident, my whole world got gray," said Rice's friend, Tory Sharon.
Prosecutors say it was Dr. James Corasanti who killed Rice. The fact that a jury acquitted him of the most serious charges was nearly too much to handle for a grieving friend.
"I honestly didn't say anything. I covered my nose and my mouth and sat there at my dining room table and cried," Sharon said. :That's all there really is to do. There's no words."
The verdict forced a father to hug his son. Another man wiped tears from his eyes. Children said silent prayers, mourning the loss of Alix Rice, while adults spent time contemplating their faith in the justice system.
Pam DiBernardo said, "I don't think justice has prevailed today. I really don't. And I'm actually sickened by it all."
"Knowing that he was drinking at a party and driving, and mortally killing somebody, he should have to face the consequences. I just can't believe that that's what the jury came up with," said neighbor Maria Kellner.
But among the fresh flowers and memorial angels are ever lasting memories of the girl who could light up a room.
"She's one of the few people who can light up a room and could actually make a difference in your day, whether you knew it or not. Just seeing that bright cheery smile on her face could brighten your whole day," said Sharon.
