LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) - "Milk smashing" is taking the internet by storm and it's spilling into the aisles of local grocery stores.

The viral videos feature teens pretending to slip and fall while smashing gallon containers of milk onto the floor. It's destructive and messy and law enforcement officials say it could cost pranksters more than the price of spilled milk.

Tonawanda Police Lt. Nick Bado said, "This is one of the most ridiculous things that I've heard of in quite awhile."

This latest craze generally involves young people. And while one person smashes the gallon containers on the floor, someone else records the prank with a camera, and the video ends up on social media sites like YouTube.

"I'm sure that this won't be tolerated for very long by business owners and by police departments who are now wasting their resources addressing it," Lt. Bado said.

Lancaster Police were looking to question a group of people who smashed gallons of milk in a local supermarket. Officers now say they've identified those individuals, though they did not say what charges those in the group will face.
