LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) - A pick-up truck plowed into an elderly pedestrian on Broadway in Lancaster, sending him to the hospital late Wednesday night.
Lancaster Police say 72-year-old Richard Stevens of Lancaster was crossing Broadway around 11 p.m. when he was hit. Early Thursday morning, Stevens succumbed to his injuries at St. Joe's Hospital.
Authorities say 24-year-old Jeffrey Szafraniec of Buffalo was behind the wheel of the truck and told authorities he did not see Stevens in the roadway and couldn't stop fast enough to avoid hitting the elderly man. Szafraniec was visibly shaken by the accident.
Stevens had just left a nearby convenience store and was not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident.
No charges have been filed against Szafraniec at this time, who police say is cooperating. Authorities are conducting an autopsy and toxicology tests.
