TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Town of Tonawanda police detectives say incidents of fraudulent use of KeyBank MasterCard debit and credit cards have spread to at least three other towns. Secret Service investigators met with Tonawanda detectives on Thursday.
More incidents have now been reported in Hamburg, West Seneca, and Amherst. There have been 30 reported cases in Tonawanda. Stolen card numbers have been used for purchases in parts of the United States and Ontario.
Town of Tonawanda Police Lt. Nick Bado says the evidence supports the initial police theory that the source of the problem is not a local merchant, but rather the data base either at KeyBank, or a processor of KeyBank information.
Lt. Bado consumers should not be afraid to patronize any local restaurants.
KeyBank has said the problem originated at more than one location of a fast food chain in Western New York. KeyBank spokeswoman Therese Myers tells News 4 other banks' credit or debit cards have also been compromised.
