GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says a man and his girlfriend have been arrested on felony drug charges, after the woman’s 14-year-old daughter reported the couple to police.
Police arrested 38-year-old Christopher Weigand and 35-year-old Laurah Nolan, both of Grand Island, Wednesday afternoon at their Huth Road home.
The sheriff’s office says they were notified by the woman’s daughter about the couple allegedly using cocaine and smoking marijuana in front of her and her 10-year-old brother. When authorities went to the home, they found a hydroponic marijuana growing operation with 20 full-grown plants and a felony amount of cocaine.
According to the sheriff’s office, Weigand works at a hydroponics store and has access to top-of-the-line growing equipment.
Authorities seized scales and packaging material from the residence and believe the couple was in the process of selling the drugs.
The sheriff's office says the teen girl had been staying with a relative in Hamburg. But after she got into an argument with her mother, authorities say the teen went to Hamburg Police and blew the whistle on her mom and her mom's boyfriend.
"I give her a lot of credit for doing what she did in order to get this resolved," said Erie County Sheriff's Sr. Detective Alan Rozansky.
Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard said, "She knew her mother was in a dangerous situation from the drug use on the part of her mother. Which she especially knew the 10-year-old brother was in the house."
The girl is now in the custody of her father out-of-state. The 10-year-old boy is under the care of Child Protective Services.
Both Weigand and Nolan are charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell, criminal possession of a narcotics drug, criminal possession of marijuana, unlawfully growing marijuana and two counts of criminal use of drug paraphernalia.
Weigand and Nolan were taken to the Holding Center after pleading not guilty to the charges. Each is being held on $50,000 bail.
