TONAWANDA, NY (WIVB) - The top official from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will tour Tonawanda in March following a critical report issued Tuesday related to the town’s air quality near the industrial zone.
Commissioner Joseph Martens is expected to tour the town on March 15. Martens e-mailed the environmental advocacy group director, Erin Heaney to advise her of the visit.
The state Department of Health released a study this week showing disturbing levels of birth defects and cancer near the Tonawanda industrial corridor.
The study was partly based off two DEC air monitors in the Tonawandas. It focused on residents' exposure to carcinogen, benzene and formaldehyde in the air.
The Department of Health will hold public session on the report on Feb. 28 at the Sheridan Parkside Community Center, 169 Sheridan Parkside Drive.
