Editor leaves Buffalo News for NY Times

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Margaret Sullivan, the editor of The Buffalo News, is leaving the paper to become the public editor of the New York Times, according to a story published on the newspaper's website Monday afternoon.

Sullivan was the newspaper's first female editor and vice president and has worked there for 32 years.

She will also be the first woman to hold the position of public editor at the New York Times.  She will begin working there on September 1.  The Times describes the position as , "writing about Times journalism and the people who produce it, and will also serve as a liaison to the public."  The Times created the position in 2003.  Sullivan will be the fifth public editor at the paper.

Sullivan is a native of Lackawanna who attended Georgetown University and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
