EPA starts air testing in Attica

Residents concerned about foul odor

ATTICA, NY (WIVB) - The federal Environmental Protection Agency has started sampling the air at Attica High School and Prospect Elementary School as part of ongoing public concern over Hillcrest Industries.

The EPA will be gathering data to analyze to identify possible risks to the public health and environment.

Residents in the community have been complaining of a foul odor and soot from the facility.  Many are concerned that it may be endangering their health.

The odor became a problem after Hillcrest began shipping recycled glass to its Favor Street site. The plant uses glass in the manufacturing of sandblasting materials and reflective beads. In July Hillcrest said they would stop using the recycled glass to alleviate the problem.  The glass had not been clean and fermented material was contributing to the putrid smell in the community.
