WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WIVB) - West Seneca Police say a horse from the Erie County Sheriff's mounted division was killed in an accident late Thursday night.

It happened on Rt. 219 southbound just south of the split with the thruway. Investigators say the deputy towing the trailer says it suffered a mechanical problem and began to sway, and when he slowed down it detached and turned over on its side. The horse died instantly.

The sheriff's office says the horse, named Joe, had just finished working a detail with his rider at the Italian Festival.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
