Evidence prompts SU to fire Bernie Fine

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WIVB) - Shocking new evidence in the child sexual abuse case prompts Syracuse University to fire assistant coach Bernie Fine

A lot was revealed this weekend, including an alleged phone conversation between one of Fine's accusers and Fine's wife, and a third man who has now said he was sexually abused by Bernie Fine.

Twenty-three-year-old Zach Tomaselli said it happened at a Pittsburgh Hotel when Tomaselli was 13 years old.

Tomaselli said, “He put his hands down my pants and started to fondle me. And this occurred for a good ten to fifteen minutes.”

Tomaselli is facing charges of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy in Maine. Tomaselli's father says his charges against Fine are fabricated.

The 65 year old Fine was in his 36th season at his alma mater. Over the weekend ESPN, on its "Outside the Lines" show, released a phone conversation from 2002 between another of Fine's accusers, Bobby Davis, and Fine's wife Laurie. Davis says he secretly recorded it. Laurie Fine admits knowing about the alleged abuse.

Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim has backed off his earlier defense of Fine and says the university took the appropriate step in firing his assistant coach. He said he's been friends with Fine for 50 years, but the focus now must stay on basketball.

Some Syracuse fans who had been skeptical of claims against Fine, say their opinions have changed, with everything that surfaced this weekend.
