Families stray from traditional trick or treating

KENMORE, N.Y. (WIVB) - Jessica Miller said, "This is the perfect way to trick or treat because it is safe. They have all different activities set up, they have crafts and games and treats for the kids, and they get to see a lot of the neighborhood kids and have a great time in a safe way."

A trend is becoming more and more common. Families and kids are straying away from the traditional way of trick or treating and attending more community events like the "Halloween Festival on the Green" in Kenmore or the "Safe and Seen Halloween" in Williamsville.

There are benefits of having these community events especially on the weekends.

Jay Bonafede said, "I think the most important thing here is the safe part of "Safe and seen Halloween". It gets kids a chance to come indoors in the light, inside where it is warm, you are not outside in the elements, outside in the dark at night where you have to worry about traffic and things like that."

Jodi Correa feels that although safety is important it is not unsafe to go door to door as long as you are with a parent. She says its more about bringing a spread out community to a central location.

Correa said, "I'm not sure it's just safer or the community feeling in the spirit of partying around the Halloween events. I think people come together and it's a chance to get more events going on rather then it being out just getting candy."
