Flames shoot into sky at two houses

Buffalo, N.Y. (WIVB) - An intense scene unfolded overnight on Fleming Street in Buffalo. Flames and emergency truck lights filled the sky overnight as Buffalo firefighters battled a fire at two homes on the city's east side.

Flames were shooting into the sky around 3 a.m. for about a half an hour. Officials say the blaze started at a vacant home on Fleming Street, then spread to an occupied home nearby.

Division Chief Don McFeely says extra crews were called to help because crews had trouble with the water.

McFeely said, “For a few seconds there, especially when there's a need for multiple lines, there are such small hydrant lines, six-inch mains, and they're probably old. So, we had to re-route a little bit to go over to the hydrant. Since we had extra companies, we took care of that right away.”

There is no confirmation on how many people lived in the occupied home. McFeely estimates the damage to both homes is approximately $75,000. Fire investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.
