TONAWANDA, N.Y (WIVB) - A firefighter from Kenmore was taken to ECMC with 2nd degree burns to the wrist, after crews took extra caution responding to a chemical plant fire in Tonawanda.

They got the call around 1:40am Sunday morning, where crews rushed to FMC Industrial Chemicals Group on Sawyer Avenue.

Upon their arrival, there was smoke showing. The fire is believed to have started inside a super stack machine on the first floor and spread to machines on the second and third floor.

Crews determined that ammonia persulfate was burning inside the machines that had to be put out with large volumes of water.

The run-off was contained and there was no release of the chemical outside of the building.

Hazmat was called out as a precaution.
