BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The 16th Annual Buffalo Garden Walk. Day one,a success. The sun, the breeze, and at times music added to the outdoor experience.

Thousands of visitors map out their destination.

"We're at Richmond and Union so, let's look at the map," said one garden walker.

Strolling into the backyards of participating homes, with elaborate gardens, is what it's all about.

The garden, filled with all kinds of colorful flowers belongs to Marty Lemke of Summer Street.

Marty Lemke of Summer Street said he has "hydrangeas, hacal lilies and patience."

News 4's Jericka Duncan asked "How long did it take you to create this masterpiece?" and Lemke replied "31 years. I've been here 31 years."

Directly across from Marty, enter an unusual world of art fused with mother nature.

Tea cups in a jacuzzi, aprons hanging on a clothing line, the unique space received instant ohs and ahs.

"It's so whimsical. I like the way she used the antiques. It's really cute," said Nancy Faller who is visiting from Chicago.

For the second consecutive year AIDS Community Services is one of three headquarters for Garden Walk.

Marketing Director Christopher Voltz says the peaceful place holds a special meaning to patience living with HIV and AIDS.

"If they have a few moments where they're having a bad day to come back here in the beautiful environment with the water it's very cathartic for them it's a healing garden," said Voltz.

On North Pearl is where you can find Nathan and Nancy Nordin's garden. Simple, serene and cozy.

"It's a great place to sit and relax and since we're retired that's what we do," added Nathan.

Whether you travel by foot or use one of the three free shuttle's available this year, it's virtually impossible to witness all 350 gardens.

Garden Walk President Jim Charlier said "We generally get about 45 to 50 thousand people and I expect we'll get that or even more this year."
