ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) - Environment New York ranks the Genesee River as one of the most toxic rivers in the country.

The group cites several New York waterways as toxic with the Genesee ranking as the 32nd dirtiest river in the country.  The report says the Seneca and Hudson Rivers are in the top 40 dirtiest rivers.

The report states that industrial facilities dumped more than 5.7 million pounds of toxic chemicals into New York’s waterways in 2010

The environmental group pushes for stricter enforcement of the the Clean Water Act including stricter  permitting and enforcement They recommend  EPA and state agencies should issue permits with tough, numeric limits for each type of toxic pollution discharged, ratchet down those limits over time, and enforce those limits with credible penalties, not just warning letters.
