Groups team up to fight breast cancer

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Three local groups are teaming up to help women get screened for breast cancer. With a little help from each other the Buffalo Sabres Alumni, ECMC, and First Niagara Financial Group are making sure woman can get some vital health care.

Members of the Buffalo Sabres Alumni unveiled a bus equipped with two digital mammography machines for woman who are under served and not tested as frequently in all areas of western New York. Former Sabres star Larry Playfair says there is a genuine concern that these particular woman aren't getting the breast cancer screenings they need.

Playfair said, “And after 45 minutes or so of talking we thought, well maybe we 'll get a couple of vans, and I don't know paint them pink and put the Alumni logo on it. Maybe that's what we could do.” And that's exactly what they did.

ECMC says appointments will be necessary and an 800-number will be established, as will website links.

The 45-foot bus will be parked at festivals, health fairs, churches, and community centers.
