SILVER SPRINGS, NY (WIVB) - The U.S. Postal Service is trimming hours at many facilities, many of them in rural areas of western New York.

Residents of Silver Springs will have the opportunity to speak Tuesday night on plans to reduce operating hours from eight to six hours a day at the village post office. The hearing is scheduled for 5 p.m at the Village Hall on Main Street.

Anyone in Silver Springs, or with a zip code of 14550 will be affected by the reduced hours to the option to close the office entirely.  Residents filled out surveys that included several options including closing entirely, using rural deliveries; making post office boxes available at another village location; or moving the boxes to a neighboring post office.

Survey responses have shown residents prefer keeping the post office open, but with reduced hours according to Post Office spokesperson Karen Mazurkowicz,

The Batavia Daily News reports reductions in service hours have also been proposed for post offices in Basom, Castile, Darien Center, East Bethany, East Pembroke, Gainesville, Kendall, Pavilion, Strykersville, Varysburg, Waterport and Wyoming.

Reductions from eight to four hours daily have been proposed for Bliss, Clarendon, Dale, Java Center, North Java, Pike, Portageville, and South Byron.
