TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - One of the Town of Tonawanda Winterfest festivities include a hockey game played between police officers and firefighters.

The winner in this case is most often charity. In a matchup between the Town of Tonawanda Police and the Ellwood Fire Company, the proceeds will go to the family of a man who lost his life in the Webster shooting.

Nick Bado from the Town of Tonawanda Police said, "With the events that happened in Rochester, it just seemed appropriate we dedicate this game, and the funds and proceeds from this game, to the children of Lt. Michael Chiapperini.

Lt. Chiapperini was shot to death alongside Tomasz Kaczowka after responding to a house fire on Christmas Eve with the West Webster Fire Department. The incident resonated with many people, including emergency responders.

"It obviously hit close to home for us. Another guy in public service, he's a fireman and a police lieutenant.  We understand what he might be going through and what people around him might be going through. So to get on board with a cause like that, it's a no brainer for us," said Bado.

Various departments donated a total of $1,500 to start with. The Sabres also donated a game-used goalie stick to raffle off.

About 15 players filled each team who were all excited to help a good cause that is near and dear to their hearts.
