BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The states new I-Stop Law that recently went into effect placed restrictions on patients from getting prescription medicines from multiple doctors.
A man by the name of Avi Isreal fought to make the law a reality after his son Michael who was addicted to pain pills, took his own life.
Isreal wanted more regulation to prevent over prescribing and medicine abuse.
For many people, this new law is causing headaches for those who are against it and need their medications. One woman against the new law is Dawn who suffers from a spinal injury has been greatly affected by I-Stop.
Simple things like walking are very painful for Dawn. "Everyday things are a challenge. Twenty minutes is my time limit before I become very uncomfortable," she said.
Since 1998 she's experienced chronic pain. She takes medication for her pain including hydrocodone.
Dawn understands Isreal's argument towards the law, but she says it will make her life more difficult and painful.
She said, "There are people out there who follow orders take their medication responsibly and now they have to incur an unnecessary burden."
Before, Dawn only had to visit her pain management doctor about 3 times a year, but now she will have to visit her doctor every single month which she says adds up more money and time.
