ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WIVB) - For the second day, family, friends and first responders gathered in Webster to salute a fallen hero.
Volunteer Firefighter Tomasz Kaczowka was shot and killed on Christmas Eve in an ambush set up by William Spengler. Spengler later killed himself. On Monday, loved ones gathered at St. Stanislaus Church to honor Kaczowka, whose brother says he knew the sacrifices of the job.

Darek Kaczowka said, "'Mom, don't you know? I'm going to save lives.' This was the typical response from a son to a concerned mother, wondering where her child was running off to at odd hours of the night. Even at the end, in the face of fear, Tomasz's only concern was to get his brothers out of the line of fire. This is what Tomasz loved to do, and needed to do. His passion and commitment to the service is something to admire."
The people of Webster came together with firefighters from all over New York State in mourning.
"I'm amazed at your strength, and the power of your faith. Even in the midst of your grief, you console those around you. I can well understand where Tomasz got his spirit of service, and concern for others," said the priest overseeing the service.
Kaczowka is gone, but his spirit lives on.
West Webster Firefighter Nick Volo said, "While we are going about our daily lives - whether it be at work or running calls - Tomasz and 'Chip' will both be watching over us, and will have our back. Rest easy brothers, we'll take it from here."
Hundreds of firefighters from Erie County and the rest of western New York made the trip to Webster for Kaczowka's funeral on Monday, and Lt. Chiapperini's on Sunday.
Snyder firefighter Robert Abrams writes to us, "It was a true honor to stand among the ranks to give a final salute to everyday heroes."
