BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Times are tough for many people and the holidays are quickly approaching.
Recently, the website Wisebread.com put out the top 25 list of items that you should never buy at the grocery store. News 4 found on a few of these items, if you stick with store brands, you might actually be able to come up with a better price.
Note: These prices do not take into account weekly sales and tax
For canned goods, stick with the store brand or discount grocery store on this one. The store brand at Wegmans and Aldi were definitely the winners and the convenience store/pharmacy had the highest priced.
There's always a big push for greeting cards going into the holiday season. We found that while you'll pay the manufacturers retail price at the grocery store, with some added incentive if you buy three or more cards at Wegmans, party supply stores beat the price by half.

And of course, there's all those toys for the kids that take batteries. If you're shopping for smaller packs, the store brand batteries at the grocery store are not a bad deal. Wisebread.com recommends buying larger amounts at wholesale shopping clubs such as BJ's and Sam's Club.
You can save on pre-cut meats if you purchase a large size and cut it yourself. This goes for beef and chicken.
Brand name cereals are always high at the grocery store, so look for bulk at wholesale clubs or buy the store brand.
Laundry detergent, cosmetics, diapers and light bulbs round off the list of things you should not buy at the grocery store.
And lastly, there are magazines. The average magazine sells for $3.99 at the market. In most cases, you can get a subscription for it for $12.00 a year. That's a savings of almost $36.00 a year.
