Judge allows Bethlehem Steel demolition

LACKAWANNA, N.Y. (WIVB) - The planned demolition of the old Bethlehem Steel building once again has approval to move forward.

Tuesday morning, Erie County Judge Kenneth Case upheld a lower court's order, allowing the demolition of the more than 100-year-old building. The former Bethlehem Steel has been empty for 30 years and is in poor condition. But others see the building as a landmark in need of saving.

Preservationists argue it's an important part of the area's history. Though they are still hopeful someone will want to fix it into a shopping center, drawing people to the area, their stay of demolition has now expired.

The Lackawanna Industrial Heritage Group presented the mayor with hundreds of signatures Tuesday afternoon showing their support to try and buy some time to explore new uses for the space and find grant money to pay for preservation.

Meanwhile, the company that now owns the building, Gateway, has not presented any alternatives to demolition.
