AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) - More than one hundred people gathered this morning to pay tribute to a woman who did so much for others.

81-year old Sheila Pelton was tragically killed while walking on the Amherst Bike Path last weekend.

Police say a drunk driver on his motorcycle smashed into a group of walkers. 25-year old Jocelyn Elberson was also killed in the wreck.

Shelia's husband is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

Saturday morning, the group came together to share memories and to walk along the bike path where the women were killed.

Shelia was a cancer survivor. Once she beat her battle with breast cancer, she became an active member of Team in Training.

At the age of 68, Shelia walked her first marathon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The Executive Director of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Nancy Hails says, "She raised a lot of money, thousands and thousands of dollars. She went on every single year to walk a marathon. Then at the age of about 72 she decided she wanted to run. So she ran her first marathon for Team in Training, once again raising a lot of money for blood cancer research."

Shelia was also a mentor for her fellow cancer survivors.

Friend and former trainer of Sheila's, Pat LaDuca says, "She was encouraging, she was driven, she was disciplined, she was motivating, and she was caring. Everything that you could put into one basket, that's how this woman was. Everybody was so upset about her passing suddenly like that, that we had to do something."

Friends and family of Sheila knew they had to do something in honor of the woman they all knew and loved.

The group who amazingly enough put this morning walk together, is also taking donations.

One day, they hope to put a bench in Sheila's honor by the path.

The local Team in Training's next event will be in Washington D.C. which will be their first without Shelia.

However, they plan on walking for her at this event and many others across the nation in the future.
