ELMA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Residents in East Aurora, Orchard Park, Hamburg and Elma could smell something similar to rotten eggs Friday afternoon, but National Fuel says there is no natural gas emergency.

The company says  work they completed Friday at the National Fuel service station in Elma released an odor. They say for customer protection, they add a smell to natural gas so leaks can be readily detected. Friday, there was no natural gas situation in western New York.

Deputies say the company was transferring a non-toxic, harmless chemical from one storage tank to another when the leak occurred. No injuries or illnesses were reported.

For area residents concerned about a legitimate gas leak, please contact National Fuel's emergency hotline at 1-800-444-3130.
