WASHINGTON, D.C. (WIVB) - A Rochester native and former Niagara University student is among the latest casualties of the War in Afghanistan.

Pfc. Theodore M. Glende, 23, was killed July 27 while serving in Logar Province.

The Department of Defense says Glende was fatally wounded when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire.  Reports say Glende was killed while trying to give medical aid to one of his fellow soldiers.

Glende was a member of the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

In a statement released Sunday, Niagara University President, Father Joseph Levesque, said:

"The Niagara University community is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own. Matt was called to serve and made the ultimate sacrifice for God and Country. We extend our sincerest sympathy and prayers to the Glende family during this most difficult time."

Glende had just recently married his wife, Alexandra.  She's asking anyone interested in donating to Wounded Warriors in his memory to follow this link .
