Buffalo, N.Y. (WIVB) - Occupy Buffalo is expanding, establishing a second encampment in Lafayette Square.
"We feel it's a strategic location, just considering the [Armed Forces] recruiters' offices, Bank of America, HSBC and the rail running by here. The visibility's very high," said Chris Phillips, with Occupy Buffalo.
With Niagara Square growing crowded, the Occupiers hope the added space will encourage more people to join them.
"We've already had dozens and dozens of new people come up today, that wouldn't have come up otherwise. So that just gives me a lot of hope for that possibility," Phillips added.
The next major event the Occupiers are planning is called the "Circle of Light."
On the evening of December 21, they're inviting everyone to bring a dish to pass, and join them at the McKinley Monument for a potluck dinner and candlelight vigil.
"People of all walks of life, all faiths, going down there. And surround McKinley Monument with candles and stand together as Buffalo -- one light, one love. And really send that energy out into the country and let them know, Buffalo is peaceful, nonviolent. We're very proud of the relationship we have and what we've accomplished here," Phillips noted.
As the Occupy Buffalo movement continues grow, the Occupiers are sharpening their focus.
Support from veterans, labor unions, students and working-class families has helped them solidify their goals.
A clearer message is emerging, too: a message about how much can be accomplished when people work together, peacefully.
"We're very proud of the Buffalo Police Department, for protecting our freedom of speech and assembly. We're very proud of that. We're very, very happy to continue that relationship here in Lafayette, just as Niagara," Phillips noted.
