TORONTO, Ont. (WIVB) - Canadian shoppers are expected to join hordes of their American counterparts on Black Friday, crossing the border for bargains. But Canadian shopping malls are fighting back extending hours and offering bonuses.
The Toronto Star reports that the Eaton Centre will open at 6 a.m. on Nov. 23, the Friday after Thanksgiving. And to sweeten the pot, the first 100 shoppers to show up at a designated kiosk will also receive a $10 gift card to shop in the mall.
Eaton Centre and other area malls such as the Fairview, Sherway Gardens and Promenade in Hamilton will open at 7 a.m. on Black Friday. Yorkdale mall will open at 6 a.m.
Black Friday is not a holiday in Canada.
Recent surveys show 40 percent of Ontario residents plan to cross the border to shop in the U.S. this holiday season.
